Holiday 2024 changes to trash/recycling pickup schedule

Because of the dates the holidays fall this year, the main change will be our collection this week:

  • Thanksgiving Day CLOSED (Thursday, Nov. 28): 1 day delay. Thursday collections will run on Friday; Friday collections run on Saturday.

The following dates will not directly affect our cluster:

  • Christmas Day CLOSED (Wednesday, Dec. 25) Yard waste routes will be paused. All Wednesday routes will be pushed to Saturday, Dec. 28.
  • New Year’s Day CLOSED (Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2025) Yard waste routes will be paused. All Wednesday routes will be pushed to Saturday, Jan. 4, 2025.

Other dates/services to note:

  • Yard waste season will end on 12/24/2024 and resume after 03/01/2025.
  • Christmas tree collection will be on the first 2 weeks in January on yard waste service day.
  • All trees over 9 feet in length will need to be cut in half and free of ornaments and tinsel/garland before being placed on the curb.

Cluster Standards

The Cluster Standards have had some updates approved by the Reston DRB in the past year or so. The standards document linked on the right sidebar has been updated to reflect this. If you have questions on anything standards-related after reading the updated (2022) standards, please email [email protected].

As a reminder, check with the cluster board and the standards before making any changes.

Any applications for new standards made by the cluster will be listed on the Cluster Standards page.

Board Meetings

Regular monthly cluster board meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month, at 7:30 PM. Please email [email protected] to request a meeting link / location if you would like to join us.

Mail Theft

There have been a several instances of mail theft from our cluster recently, allowing thieves access to homeowner bank account information. Police, USPIS and FBI are investigating and at least one culprit has been found guilty.

What you can do:

  • Do not leave mail in your mailbox overnight
  • Sign up for USPS Informed Delivery emails
  • Have a neighbor collect your mail when you travel, or if you cannot leave the house
  • Set up a USPS vacation hold (can be done online)

Glass Recycling

Since glass is no longer picked up by the curbside Republic service, there are drop-off points (large purple bins/dumpsters) around Fairfax county for all types and colors of glass containers. The nearest one to us is in the corner of Baron Cameron Park closest to the Wiehle and Baron Cameron intersection.

The new Reston Comprehensive Plan is out

The draft was released in 2022, and we encourage all residents of Reston, whether owners or tenants, to check it out.

While the commenting period has supposedly closed, the comprehensive plan is so far still accessible (PDF).

View draft plan (commenting still seems to be accessible as of 10/18/2023)

The rough schedule after October 2022:

  • all comments will be considered and the draft plan amended in November 2022
  • the final plan sent to the Fairfax Board of Supervisors for approval in December

According to the Fairfax County website: "Currently, the staff report with responses to public comments is expected for release in early 2023. Staff will provide updates to Planning Commission and Board of Supervisor committees, as requested, prior to the release of the staff report. Public hearings for the Plan Amendment are anticipated for spring 2023."
